Do you have a caged or crated animal, such as a dog or a rabbit, which overheats in the summer? And, of course, who can afford AC? Well, here's an idea that just might have that little, limp tail wagging joyfully again. It's inexpensive, easy, and did I mention that you probably have everything you need right at home with you waiting to be recycled or thrown out in the garbage?

Frozen pop bottles! You take a regular soda bottle(even a two- or three-liter would work, it would just take longer for results and take more space.) Fill it approximately three-quarters full. Squeeze gently so the water rises a little but doesn't spill and while the bottle is still a little flat, screw on the cap tightly. The idea is to not have the bottle too full of air, so when the water expands, it has somewhere to go. you don't want the bottle leaking and making a mess. An alternative is to leave the cap loose and tighten it when frozen. Make sure the cap is very tight in both cases. You don't want your beloved pet thinking it's a chew toy and choking on the lid! If you see them chewing the lid at all, you should take the bottle from them, anyway. And never leave them unsupervised.

Some animals (especially young dogs) love to chew bottles. If you see them doing it, especially if they get the lid off of it, remove immediately! Licking is fine. Some animals just seem to think it's a popsicle and lick it to cool off. The idea is just to have them cuddle it and lay against it to cool off.

You may want to start freezing a few before it gets hot so they're ready when it does. It takes several days for the bottles to completely freeze and, although partially frozen bottles will still work to a point, fully frozen ones are much better!

Here's to you and your pet having a wonderful summer!
